Funky Hair Day

Friday was Funky Hair Day at BISS.  For a fee of 25RMB (£2.50/$4.00), Isabelle and Oliver could wear what they wanted to school and make their hair “funky”.  Owen used lots of gel on Oliver to make a mohican and lots of spikes and then sprayed it all different colours:

Oliver's funky hair - mohicans and colour.

Even better in daylight!

Owen laughed his socks off when he was reading the instructions on one of the spray cans.  Here are the actual instructions, word for word, with one blank left to your imagination:

“Using the front must is well this article shake the, then f**k the hair for good.
Can use a the sort shampooes a cleaning.”

Interesting translation!

Isabelle had a lot of pony tails and then we sprayed them all different colours:

They enjoyed their hairstyles for the day.  It was not so much fun to get it all off at the end of the day!  3 shampoo’s for Oliver and it all eventually came out.  I did multiple washes on Isabelle and she still had blue and pink left in her hair on Saturday!

Fashion Show – 5 year old style

The first half of the school term Oliver has been learning all about “We Can Be”.  This has included using imagination and story telling to help express feelings and opinions.  He explored different characters at the circus and use of magic.  The finale of this topic was a fashion show where all the kids could dress up as a favorite character and strut their stuff on the stage!

Oliver dressed up as Buzz Lightyear for his turn on the stage.  He exuded confidence as he walked down the cat walk with a huge smile on his face.  He rocked out to “I like to Move it, Move it”.  What a cool dude!

All the children did a fantastic job – lots of smiles, strutting, confidence and great costumes.

Harbin – Tigers, Snow and Ice Spectacular

We had a fabulous weekend in Harbin.  Friday January 18th, we collected the kids from school at noon ready to fly up to Harbin in the very north of China. In fact, any further north and we would have been in Russia!  Evidence of this can be seen in the town centre:

Chinese and Russian signs above the shops in Harbin.

This was an “Emerald” weekend away as there would be 6 families staying in the same hotel and doing all the same site seeing!  We had travelled up with John, Jenny and their 2 boys: Daniel and Luke, and the others were arriving at different times during Friday and Saturday morning.  Once we had walked off the plane into the baggage claim area, we (along with every other person on the plane) immediately started to bundle up: ski gloves, scarves, additional layers.  It was cold, cold, cold!  We stepped out of the airport and felt the cold air on our faces.  It was only minus 27 degrees centigrade that night!  Luckily it was a short walk to the waiting car.  It was funny to see the inside of the car windows frost up during our 45 minute drive to the hotel.  Once we got to the hotel (Shangri-la – highly recommended in Harbin) it was time for dinner.  We dropped bags off and decided to eat in the hotel restaurant.  It was buffet style and the kids loved being able to help themselves.  We also met up with Marie and Tim and their 3 children: Cai, Lia and Seren.  They had arrived earlier this morning and had already done some sight-seeing.

We got up early on Saturday morning and began the long task of getting dressed. Layering up with thermals, long sleeves, 2 pairs of socks, sweaters and then ski coats.  Then add ski gloves and liners, hats, ear muffs, face warmers and scarves!!  Poor Isabelle and Oliver did not like wearing so many clothes and they weebled their way down the hotel corridor to the elevator!  They both look the Michelin Man!  We had arranged for a mini-bus to take us, John & Jenny + family and Tim & Marie + family to the Tiger breeding station first.

Tiger Breeding Organization

Tiger Breeding Organization

The Siberian Tiger Park covers an area of more than a million square meters (250 acres+) and it was set up as a place to breed and house Siberian tigers.  The Siberian tiger is the largest of the big cats.  The breeding program has been very successful, and there are now about 800 Siberian tigers (about 100 can be seen here) along with other large cats like lions and pumas.  This is amazing, since it is estimated that there are only about 500 Siberian tigers left in the wild.  Almost all of these wild ones are in Russia, and maybe 12 are in China.  The facility includes a museum, breeding areas, and cages/pens for the other large cats.  It is amazing to see a group of striped golden tigers walk and run together.   You can also have the option to buy some live animals to feed the tigers with:

We were full of good intentions to buy a chicken but by the time we had walked through to the bus, we had lost our opportunity.

After spending a good few hours here, our feet and our faces were starting to get numb.  The temperature was minus 35 degrees centigrade and you cannot stay out for too long!  We all got back into our lovely warm bus and drove back to the Hotel for lunch and to warm through!  After we were toastie again, it was back in the bus to check out the snow sculptures at Sun Island Park.

The Harbin Snow and Ice festival officially starts January 5th and usually lasts one month.  Ice sculpture decoration technology ranges from the modern (using lasers) to traditional (with ice lanterns).   Some of the most impressive ice sculptures are full size buildings made from blocks of 2–3 feet thick crystal clear ice directly taken from the Songhua River.

We had been overwhelmed enough for 1 day!  Tigers and snow sculptures and we had been outside for most of it.  Our feet were cold and it was time for dinner.  All the other families from Emerald had arrived earlier in the day so we were looking forward to a lovely meal with everyone!

We had booked several tables at the back of the restaurant in the hotel.  All the boys gravitated towards one, while the girls took another and that left all the adults to enjoy an evening together at the main table!  🙂

We had found a Costa coffee shop and warmed up with coffee and hot chocolate.  After that, we needed to get from downtown to the Ice Festival and so jumped in a couple of taxis.  This was a very interesting experience as Owen watched our driver signing the driver of the other taxi (where John, Jenny, Luke and Daniel were) and then both taxis pulled over into a side road.  The drivers were trying to negotiate an exorbitant fee to take us.  Thank goodness for iPhone’s with maps as John saw that our hotel was right around the corner so we just got out the taxis and started walking.  A little bit scary and I was sad that we were targetted for a rip off (especially with young children with us).  Once back at the hotel, we (hotel concierge!) negotiated taxis to take us to the Ice Festival at Zhaolin Park and then wait to bring us back to the hotel when we were done!  A much better solution.

We safely returned to the hotel (not to be under-estimated, given our earlier experience with the taxi ride!)  It was hot chocolate all round before we all crashed into our beds.  An exhausting day with so much walking and the biting cold.  I definitely could not live in this climate!  We had decided to get up early again to take advantage of a couple more hours on the frozen river.  Our flight back to Shanghai was early afternoon on Monday January 21st and we wanted to make the most of our final hours.  Isabelle and Oliver both wanted to ride in the tanks again, do the tyre slide down a few more times and try out the ice bumper cars:

This was a fantastic, fabulous, wonderful weekend.  It would not have been on our “must see” list if it were not for Jane Steele, lovely Emerald friend.  She organised all the families, researched transportation, hotels, things to do and gave us the inspiration to go!  If you come to China in the Winter, Harbin should not be missed!

Bake Sale – Enterprise and Philanthropy

Over the Christmas holidays, Isabelle and her friend Ava made a rice krispy Christmas tree.  They wanted to sell this at a Bake Sale and had made invites to their friends in our neighborhood to come to this “Bake Sale”.  I stopped them from doing this, explaining that they needed to have more than 1 item to sell and also have more than 1 hour notice to sell something!!

The Rice Krispy Christmas Tree that started it all!

The Rice Krispy Christmas Tree that started it all!

This information had obviously sunk in because a few days later Isabelle said that she wanted to do a Bake Sale to help her with some spending money for a trip to Harbin later in January.  And so started the lesson in business 🙂

First, we talked about what she should sell and how much she should charge.  Then we talked about advertising and how to get people to come to buy “stuff” from her.  Then we talked about the fact that more people would come and buy if they knew it was for a good cause and not just for spending money for Isabelle!!

She decided that she wanted to do the Bake Sale the weekend before our trip to Harbin.  Isabelle wanted to send hand written invites to every house in our neighborhood, and so Owen then educated her about the power of email!  He sent an email to every house in our compound to advertise her venture.  She had also decided on what to sell and between her and Ava, they had persuaded Owen, Emma (Ava’s Mum) and me to make things for them to sell!

The week of January 7th – 12th and Isabelle can talk of nothing but her Bake Sale on Saturday!  Owen had been busy making marshmallows (1000 times better than what you can buy in the shop!) rice krispy treats and flapjacks.  Emma had made gingerbread, banana bread, cookies and cupcakes.  I had made cupcakes.  A lovely friend had also made brownies for the girls to sell.  They decided to sell everything for 10 RMB.  They had to work out the math, after all!!  Owen had a couple of helpers – Oliver and Ethan (Ava’s brother and Oliver’s best friend) were all too eager to lick out bowls!

The Bake Sale was on for 1 hour only.  Owen had received some “pre-orders” from people who could not make it but wanted to buy some goodies, so before Isabelle and Ava opened for business they were already in profit!  From 2-3pm on Saturday January 12th the girls sold almost everything on the table.  They were nice to all customers, worked out all the amounts to charge and the right change, packaged it all up nicely and kept a smile on their faces.  I was so proud of them.

A lot of customers!

To all our amazement, the girls made 2300 RMB in one hour.  (Approximately £230 / $180)  The residents of Emerald had been very generous – many of them donating more than the total of items they were buying.  Because they had made so much money, Emma, Owen and I had a conversation about the money and what they thought would be a good amount for spending money.  They decided to take 250RMB each and donate the rest to charity.

On Monday morning, Isabelle took a fat wad of cash – 1800RMB into school to give to her teacher.  Owen had summarised the activities of the weekend and had sent that in with a DVD of photos.  We were so proud when the Head of Primary phoned to say that he was so proud of Isabelle and Ava and their accomplishments.  He had called them into his office and he told Owen that they were articulate and enthusiastic about all they had done (“one of the best 10 minutes of my teaching career” he said!).  He also said that he would be highlighting Isabelle and Ava in the Primary assembly on Thursday.   Owen and Emma attended the assembly (secretly hiding on the balcony and taking video – I was away and so bummed to miss it).  Not only did they spend 10 minutes on stage answering questions about their Bake Sale, but Mr King also wrote about Isabelle and Ava in his weekly blog update:

Student Enterprise and Philanthropy

On Tuesday I had the delight of meeting two students, who had taken the time to plan, set up and run a bake sale in order to raise funds for a school charity and a trip to Harbin. Ava Rhind and Isabelle Jones displayed enterprising nature and charitable spirit by setting aside personal time outside of school to provide baked goods to the lucky (and generous) residents of the Emerald.
Isabelle and Oliver outside the Primary Head's office. For all the right reasons!!

Isabelle and Ava outside the Primary Head’s office. For all the right reasons!!

Ava and Isabelle exhibited key attributes outlined in our school’s vision and values

-a strong sense of responsibility

-the importance of kindness and consideration for others

-a positive contribution to the local community

-being a confident and responsible citizen.

It was an absolute delight listening to these two budding entrepreneurs’ recounts of the bake sale and the lead up to it. They spoke clearly and eloquently about their ideas, the support from parents and neighbours and the generosity of those purchasing the tasty treats. I am sure their parents are as proud of them as we are and we all wait with baited breath to see what their next venture might be.

I have only one complaint…where was my cake?

I am so proud of Isabelle.  She was highlighted at school for all the right reasons.  They both raised so much money for the orphanage (1800RMB goes a loooonnnnggg way here) and then spoke about the steps they went through in a clear and articulate manner.

Sanya for New Year

After a very busy Christmas, we were all looking forward to a relaxing, sunny beach holiday in Sanya, Hainan.  This island is at the southern most point of China and is nicknamed the Hawaii of China!  Late afternoon on Thursday December 27th, we flew from Shanghai to Sanya.  We were greeted at arrivals by a very nice man from the hotel to take us to check in.  It was a 45 minute drive through roads with large brightly lit hotels and buildings – it reminded us a little bit of Benidorm!  We arrived at the Intercontinental hotel, checked in and then got on a golf cart to take us to our room.

The hotel is beautifully laid out and is a sprawling complex of 1 or 2 storey beach side rooms, restaurants and pools.  There is a high rise building behind all of this but it is tucked into the side of the mountain and quite unobtrusive.

We wake up on Friday to glorious sunshine, blue skies and 25 degree heat.  We ate breakfast in the club continental restaurant, after which we walked around the resort.  We checked out all the different restaurants, fitness facilities and kids club.  Both Isabelle and Oliver wanted to do some activities while we were there so we checked the times of their favourites.  It was back to the room to change into swim suits and go to one of the pools for the day.  We settled by the only heated pool which was also by the kids slide/kids pool.  Oliver immediately made a friend and the 3 of them were off sliding, jumping, swimming.  Owen and I relaxed by the pool for the whole day!!

Saturday was another day by a different pool and today it was Isabelle’s turn to make a friend.  We read books while the children played – they really are water babies and are totally happy to spend the whole day in the pool.  1 kids club activity to do – fishing off the jetty.  They came back with a bucket filled with a large eel, 3 large fish and a large crab.  They had also caught 5 shrimp but there was no evidence of these as they had obviously been eaten by everything else they caught…..  We took a couple of photos and then walked down to the beach to put them all back into the ocean.  We ate at Club Continental that evening.

Sunday – was a chilly day and we actually had to wear long sleeve t-shirts!  Kids had a couple of activities at kids club – pancake making (Isabelle burnt her hand on the hot plate) and they also made an alarm clock. They were supposed to go fishing again but Isabelle’s hand hurt too much.  Even though Isabelle’s hand burning was an accident (she touched the hot plate that they were making pancakes on), the staff could not have handled it better.  They immediately applied ice and gave us a special burns cream (burns are obviously a matter of fact in the kitchen!)  The next day there was no evidence of the burn and it was almost forgotten!  That night we ate at Mediterraneano and the kids got to play on a bouncy castle that goes up every evening.  Owen had delicious beef and I had lamb!  It had not been a pool day as it was too chilly for all of us.  It was a lazy movie day in our hotel room.

New Year’s Eve dawned a little warmer and we had to be early as Isabelle and Oliver were going off to hunt for seashells on the beach as a kids club activity.  Straight after they made shell necklaces.  We picked Oliver up after these activities, but Isabelle wanted to stay and play with a lovely little boy who would not let go of her hand at kids club!  (We later found out that he is the General Manager’s little boy!!)

We went to the pool and had lunch sitting by the pool. Although it was a blue sky day, it is still a little cooler than when we first arrived.  Our New Year’s Eve
Celebration dinner was a magnificent buffet at Mediterraneano that included baby lobster, crab, all sorts of meats, Chinese specialities and a chocolate fountain!  It was all delicious and we stretched it out as long as possible, but the kids did not make it past 10 pm.  Owen struggled through to 11.55 and then it was just me to make phone calls back home – slightly tiddly!!

New Year’s Day was a beautiful day. Kids were off to kids club for t-shirt art and hand/feet art in the morning.  Owen and I sat and chatted with the General Manager all morning.  Jeff had arranged bikes for us in the afternoon so we rode to the opposite side of the bay where there is a large marina and we stopped on the way back at a fab playground park for the kids to play.  Dropped the bikes off and then headed to the pool……

We took 2 tandem bikes to the other side of the bay to check out the Marina. This was the only time we ventured out of the resort!

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday was more of the same!  Pool, pool, pool.  We at least tried all the restaurants in the resort!!  We did not leave the resort – other than on the bike ride. We were all perfectly content to laze by the pools.  One afternoon the kids spent an hour or so creating art out of rocks.

Owen and I read books on our iPads and Isabelle and Oliver were in paradise, throwing themselves down the water slide or playing in the pool.  It is amazing how long they will play in the pool for.  They also made sand pictures and had a water gun fight in the pool as part of kids club activities.  One final highlight of Kids Club was an hour spent in the restaurant making cookies and muffins with Chef Alex.  They both absolutely loved that!

The general manager told us that the hotel was fully booked, but you would never have known it.  The pools were mainly empty (except for the heated pool!) and there was always room in the restaurants.  The resort is a paradise – a zen zone!  It has a very calming, peaceful atmosphere and we were very well looked after.
It was just what we were looking for after a busy end to the year.

Shanghai Christmas

What a wonderful Christmas in Shanghai. We are so fortunate to have a large “family” of Ex-pats here who host so many wonderful events and look out for each other. The season started with a “Stars and Stockings” party at Jane’s house.  A fabulous night of laughter, 80’s dancing, great food and booze.

The next day, Isabelle and Oliver were at the Shanghai Expat Association’s Christmas Party at the 4 Seasons in Downtown Shanghai.  Even Santa came to visit them there! Kids from all nationalities from all over Shanghai were enjoying the festivities – so many crafts that the kids did not get through them all.  They came home laden with home made Christmas tree ornaments, gingerbread houses and presents from Santa.

On Christmas Eve, we were all at Marie and Tim’s house – with the same lovely group of people that we would be enjoying the rest of Christmas with.  This was a lovely relaxed affair and we were home by 7:30 pm ready to continue exciting the kids about an imminent visit!

Christmas morning the children woke up at 6:30am. We could hear squeals of excitement and giggles as they opened their stockings together.  They managed to contain themselves until 7:30 and then came in to “wake” us up.  We had a wonderful relaxing morning opening presents, playing with toys and enjoying a leisurely breakfast.

What could these possibly be??

At 12.45 we walked around the corner to Lin and Nick’s house as they were hosting Christmas Dinner.  Nick works for Intercontinental Hotel group and they were catering it, so no-one had the burden of preparing the meal.  The staff had completely taken over the kitchen (using the garage as a staging area) and had even set up a bar!

Half of us at the table (bar is in the background).

We were 5 families in 1 house – 22 of us, including all the kids.  We had a fabulous meal – 5 hours at the table, laughing all the time.  The kids managed about 45 minutes of eating before they were all off playing together.  Again, it was so relaxing – no cooking or clearing up to worry about.  When you are so far from home with no family around, this could not have been a better celebration.

After a brief 90 minute re-charge back at home, we were off to more friends – Suzanne and Brian’s, for the evening.  Another fantastic get together.

Boxing Day, and it was our turn to host.  The morning was a flurry of activity; cooking sausage rolls, legs of lamb and preparing for 30 people at our house at 3:00pm.  Our wonderful Ayi, Angela, was a huge help and stayed through the afternoon to help with the kids.  We had set up a craft activity area for them downstairs and some other friends had brought their Wii system for the older children to play upstairs.  While they were occupied we played our traditional Boxing Day “Dirty Santa” game.  Absolutely hilarious to see the tacky, gaudy gifts that people had found for less than 50RMB (£5/$7)!!  It was the perfect wind-down from a very hectic Christmas and we were cleared up before 10:00pm.

A Shang-high and Shang-low week or Juggling Act Part 2

Last week, Owen was in the UK for the week.  I took Thursday and Friday off so that I could focus on the kids (plus all the Christmas activities that were taking place or needed to be done).  I am so fortunate that the Ex-pat community is so supportive of one another.  My friends here all know that I work (sometimes long hours) and I had many emails offering to look after the kids, feed us or cover school bus drop off and pick up.  It is such a relief to know that I am not alone when Owen has to travel back to the UK for his pain relief medication.  In fact, I was over whelmed with the emails that came pouring in.  I am not alone here. Neither is Owen.    This is truly a community that cares about one another.

So, the Shanghai-high part of the week was the support that I received.  The Shang-low part of the week was the juggling act…..

I feel guilty calling upon my friends to help.  I know that they really want to help and that they do not think anything of it.  But, I still cannot help feeling guilty.  In my head, I am trying to work out when I can repay.  And, I know that they don’t want repaying!  It is part of the Ex-pat life to support one another and I am trying really hard to be a part of that.  It is so difficult to release some of the independence and “I can do it” mentality.  Work is especially difficult at the moment as we approach year end with lots of changes for 2013.  I am feeling under pressure all round.  It is a constant juggling act between home and work – the experts are right – you really cannot have it all 😦

Christmas at BISS

The children are certainly getting into the Christmas spirit at school.  Friday December 7th was a busy day at BISS.  In the morning Oliver had his Christmas concert and then we were back again in the evening for the school Christmas Carol Concert.

The concert consisted of 5 nursery classes and 3 Reception classes, all dressed in a different Christmas theme and singing their little hearts out!  I think they might have all been over-whelmed as they were on the stage in the Theatre with all the lights on them, and the Theatre was packed full of parents!  (Owen was in the UK and unfortunately missed his performance – thank goodness for video cameras!)

Different themes for different classes.

Different themes for different classes.

The Concert lasted about 30 minutes with lots of different songs about the Holiday season.  All the children were so good – singing loudly, sitting in the correct places and generally not much crying!  There were a few who got upset when they saw Mum or Dad!

Oliver's class were Christmas presents and he was wearing a lovely top underneath. His costume was a surprise!

Oliver had also had a trip to the post office last week to send the Christmas card he had made:

We had Emma, Ava and Ethan over for dinner in the evening and then all of us climbed into our van to go back to school for the Carol Concert.  It was a lovely performance with all years involved.  We had a couple of dance performances – ballet, jazz and tap.  The band played a few songs – there is a very talented saxophone player who improvised one song!  And, of course, the different school choirs – from the very youngest (Rainbow Choir) up to Secondary/Senior school.  At the end, it was a sing-along for everybody with favourites like Silent Night and We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

There was even an interval so we could enjoy mince pies and mulled wine!

Thanksgiving – British (American) Chinese style

Thursday November 22nd 2012 is Thanksgiving (the 4th Thursday in November) – a traditional American holiday but one that we have celebrated since 1995 when we first moved from the UK to America.  The first few years, Owen and I were always invited to the homes of our friends in Atlanta.  Then we started hosting at our house – opening our home to people who could not make it home to be with their families, or those who just wanted to be somewhere different.  It is one of our favourite holidays because it is all about sharing quality time with people who are special to you, good food (Turkey with all the trimmings, apple pie, pumpkin pie) and giving thanks.  I am thankful for a wonderful family, brilliant friends, my health and a job that I love and that has offered such a fabulous opportunity to live and work in China.

This year, the kids were in school and it was a work day for me!  But, we had decided to invite some friends from the Emerald to share our Thanksgiving meal in the evening.  Owen had found a western shop that would deliver a Turkey to – deep fried ready to eat – at a cost of £100/$150!!!!  We made green bean casserole, traditional stuffing, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots, mange tout and sweet corn.  I made pumpkin roll (very yummy) and we also had the store deliver apple pie and a chocolate mousse cake.

A delicious meal shared with friends – all that Thanksgiving is about!  Lots of laughter and a new experience for our British friends.  It is good for Isabelle and Oliver to be reminded of American traditions, as they are both citizens of the USA having been born there.

Chengdu – weekend of site seeing

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China and is home to 14 million people.  It is a 3 hour flight from Shanghai and this is where we set off to on Saturday morning.  Chengdu is also known as the Country of Heaven!  It has a deep history which can be traced back over 2300 years.

We arrived at lunchtime and went straight to our hotel – the Sheraton Chengdu Lido in the heart of downtown.  We dumped our bags in our room and then solicited the help of the Concierge to organize a couple of things for us.  Within minutes, Jack (a super helpful, very nice man) had arranged a car and driver for us; provided us with a map of the City, highlighted areas that we should visit and gave us his cell phone number in case we got into any difficulties!

We ate lunch (buffet style) in the hotel and by the time we had finished, our driver and car were waiting to whisk us away for an afternoon of site seeing.  We started at the Wuhou Memorial Temple.  Our driver took a photo of us outside the doors and told us where he would be waiting for us when we ready for the next stop.

First Stop – Wuhou Memorial Temple.
This memorial celebrates the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. During that period, Sichuan belonged to the Kingdom of Shu, which was at almost constant battle with two other kingdoms for more than 100 years.  Wuhou Memorial is dedicated to the heroes of those battles.  Zhuge Liang, the military advisor of the King of Shu, even 1800 years after his death, is still regarded as one of the most gifted and brilliant strategists China ever had.

This temple has some larger than life statues, mainly dating back to the 17th century but some from the 14th century.  There is also the most magnificent bonsai tree garden hidden away in the middle – a lovely surprise!

Very cool architecture outside too! This passage led into the Bonsai tree garden that was not sign posted and so a delightful surprise to stumble upon.

What you don’t see is that there at least 8 people behind me also taking photos of our children!

There are stone carvings of the key individuals during The Three Kingdoms period. Again, many people behind us taking photos of the children!

After a leisurely couple of hours walking around the lovely grounds of the Wuhou Memorial Temple, we walked into Jinli Street.  This is a big tourist area filled with many shops, cafes, street food vendors and souvenirs.  We passed a stall with a man painting on the inside of glass bottles.  The pictures were so detailed and beautifully done.  Both Isabelle and Oliver came away with mini bottles with their names painted.  We watched while he did it and was amazed at the skill to be able to do this!

Ear candling or ear cleaning. Not for the faint hearted!! Although, they do train for over 2 years to do this. People were lining up to have their ears cleaned……

I bought a lovely pair of silver earrings in this shop. The lady was dressed in an old Chinese Princess Warrior costume and agreed to pose with the children!  Her head gear looks really heavy!

A lovely couple of hours spent shopping and site-seeing here.  We headed back to the hotel after this as James (the fantastic concierge) had managed to get us front section tickets for the Chinese Opera.  As we needed to be at the Theatre for 7:30pm we decided to eat at hotel again.  Another buffet for the kids, who have completely won over the staff.  We, rather they, get so much attention – the Chinese want to know their names and ages.  They were escorted around the food stations and assisted both of them with filling their plates!  Owen and I sat back and watched!!!

Chinese Opera Theatre

We were so excited to be going to the Chinese Opera as we had heard great things about this.  There were 7 different acts in the 90 minute show, with the finale being the “Face Changing” display.

First on was a dance depicting a love story where 3 heros fight against lvbu.  Then the story continued with Lv Bu and Diao Chan.  There was a stick puppet show, some acrobatics, a hand shadow show, Sichuan Opera song (not our favorite!) a man playing the Erhu and then the finale which was the face changing.

Chinese Opera – dance display

Beautiful dancers

The face changing was the most intriguing display as you could not see how it was done at all.  It is a closely guarded secret and it is not known how they do it.  The performers even came into the audience – 1 was 3 feet away from us and did 3 face changes.  It was impossible to see how they did it – the effect is stunning.  They also threw some masks into the audience.  A gentleman behind us caught one and then gave it to Isabelle, who was thrilled!  Oliver, meanwhile, was fast asleep.  We could not keep him awake and he fell asleep half way through the performance.  It had been such a busy day!

On Sunday morning, we got up early to go to the Panda Research Base.  I have written a separate post on this trip.  It was amazing!

When we got back we went to the Wenshu Monastery.  This buddhist monastery is one of the oldest and best preserved temples in Chengdu.  Worshippers light candles and incense, constantly filling the temple with a thick, perfumed smoke.

The monastery, formerly known as Xinxiang Temple, is situated north of the central square on Renmin Zhong Lu.  During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, a monk named Cidu arrived, built a small hut to live in and carried out a practice of complete self-denial.  Legend holds that when Cidu was cremated, a statue of Wensu (Bodhisattva Manjusri in Sanskrit) appeared in the flames and stared at the onlookers.  After this people began regarding Cidu as the reincarnation of the Bodhisattva Manjusri.  Thereafter the Xinxiang Temple was rechristened as Wenshu Temple.

One of the many Buddha’s. There are over 300 Buddha’s on display. I took this photo before noticing that photography was not allowed. It is still an active Monastery and we saw many monks walking around.

Cultural relics are the highlights of Wenshu Monastery.  Since the Tang and Song dynasties, over 500 pieces of painting and calligraphy by celebrities have been stored here.  In the Sutra-Preservation Pavilion, many famous handwriting exhibits, paintings, and artwork are restored.  These precious works of art were created by renowned Chinese painters and calligraphers, including Zhang Daqian, Zheng Banqiao, and Feng Zikai.  Of all the precious relics, a piece of the broken skull of Xuan Zhang, a renowned monk of the Tang Dynasty, is the rarest. Another treasure is a delicate jade Buddha statue brought from Burma to China in 1922 by Xing Lin, a Buddhist monk who walked the whole distance.  In addition, the monastery houses some 300 Buddha statues of various materials including iron, bronze, stone, wood, and jade, some gloriously painted.

We saw many people praying and bringing offerings to the different Buddha’s.

If you look closely, you can see the chains that are tying the animals down!

Very peaceful here…..

The detail of the architecture is amazing. I love the curved roofs that you see in the older Chinese buildings.

Another stop on our site-seeing tour today, was to the Ancient Town.  This is a walled area that has many alleys and narrow roads filled with shops, food, and souvenirs.   We had just walked in when we saw this couple have wedding photos taken.  Red is an extremely lucky colour in China, so brides are always married wearing a red dress!

Starbucks is everywhere! We stopped here for coffee, hot chocolate and cake!

And we also stopped for ice cream!

Fabulous photos that come to life……

Owen: “your move”

Back in our hotel room and the kids with their Face Changing Masks.

Our Sunday night dinner was a recommendation from Jack (lovely concierge!)  We walked a couple of blocks to a Sichuan restaurant.  The cuisine in this area of China is spicy and Owen and I wanted to try some authentic food from here.  Nobody spoke English in the restaurant, so between our iPhone apps and the pictures on the menu, we ordered several dishes to share.  I made sure that we ordered plenty of Mifan (rice – one of the few words I know!!) so that Isabelle and Oliver would have something that was not spicy.  As it turned out, a couple of the dishes were not too bad and they tried almost everything.  It was very funny watching them with the chopsticks – they have been practicing at home, but they are difficult to use in little hands!  It was a delicious meal.  A table full of food, beer for Owen and I, and we had change out of £30.

Spicy Sichuan dinner!

Another early start on Monday morning as we were back to the Panda Research Facility to cuddle with a Panda Bear.  After we had experienced this fantastic interaction, we walked around the sanctuary again.  We spotted this Peacock on a roof.

After the Panda Experience, we went to another restaurant recommendation for Hot Pot – another speciality of the Sichuan region.  The Pots on the table had a spicy chilli oil side and a chicken broth side.  This was ideal for us as Owen and I cooked all our food in the spicy side, while Isabelle and Oliver could enjoy the same meat and vegetables without the zing!  This was another delicious meal.

Sichuan Hot Pot for Lunch

Finished lunch, off to the airport and home we went!  A fantastic weekend with so many memories to last a lifetime.  I will never forget the Panda that we cuddled with.  The whole weekend was non-stop enjoyment.

Chengdu is a fabulous City to visit.
