Blue Frog, Bouncy Castle and Sports – Birthday boy celebrations

My lovely little boy celebrated his birthday this week.  He has been talking about “turning 6” for several weeks and has been very excited about his party.  I have been so busy at work,  I am totally amazed that his party went as smoothly as it did, as everything  was last minute this year!

On the day of his birthday he had a school trip to the Wild Animal Kingdom.  His topic this term is all about the “Carnival of Animals” so this was an added bonus on his special day!  After breakfast, he  had time to open a couple of presents.  He had been asking for months for a skateboard, so guess what he got from Mum and Dad!!

Yeah - I got the skateboard!! It is wicked.

Yeah – I got the skateboard!! It is wicked.

At the end of the day, we took Oliver out to Blue Frog restaurant at the Kerry Parkside (his choice for his birthday dinner).  We stopped at Baker & Spice on the way back to get some yummy cakes.  We stuck Oliver’s candle in his and sang Happy Birthday back at home!  Owen was messing around with the plate and kept pulling it away from Oliver!  He eventually blew it out and made a wish!

I WILL blow that candle out!

I WILL blow that candle out!

A few days later it was party time!  Oliver had requested a party of sports and games and wanted to invite all his class.  We hired the Function Room at The Emerald, ordered a Pirate bouncy castle and hired a couple of coaches from Sports World to help run the sports and games.  We had the party on Friday evening and invited as many parents who wanted to enjoy a glass of fizz at the end of the week too.

Happy Birthday, my sweet boy.

Once all the children arrived, they started on the Bouncy Castle.  It was a beautiful day, blue skies, sunshine and 23 degree heat.  All the kids were running around outside and having fun on the Bouncy Castle before the Lego tower challenge.  4 teams building the tallest possible towers in a 10 minute period.  This was the perfect lead up to pizza!!

After pizza had been wolfed down, the coaches from Sports World arrived and it was over to them to manage the chaos and mayhem!  They did a fantastic job of keeping 18 boys and girls active, competitive and paying attention.  There was just under an hour of running around playing lots of different chasing games, tagging games and ball games.

Ready, set, go! It is time for Zombie Tagging.

The last 15 minutes of the party (only 2 hours, but felt like 6!!) was wind down time and birthday cake time.  We have had great success with Sweet Ever After cupcakes for the last couple of birthday parties, so we ordered from them again.  We had a flock of Angry Birds for all the children!

Oliver really enjoyed his party and I hope that all his friends had fun – it was certainly lovely to watch them all playing.  We were all back home by 7.30pm and ready to put our feet up!  Relieved that the celebrations are over now!!

Karaoke, Cupcakes, Movies and Sleepover

As Isabelle’s birthday falls in the middle of the long summer holiday, she always misses out on a birthday party as everyone is away.  When we came back from the long break we promised Isabelle a party with her friends.

Her choice was to celebrate with a karaoke party and sleepover so we said that she could invite 10 of her closest friends over to enjoy singing to the latest pop songs and have 6 of them to stay for the night.

All the girls!

We had bought some wine glasses with jewels for the girls to bedazzle them.  They also painted t-shirts and made bracelets.  The lovely Phoebe came to do all the girls nails.  So, while all the karaoke was going on in the living room, the girls  rotated around all the other activities and managed to fill 2 hours very quickly!

More friends had lent us a box full of wigs and glasses which the girls absolutely loved!  Made for great photo opportunities and all the girls really hammed it up for their friends and the camera.

Oliver was the judge of the Karaoke Sing Off and thanks to some side deals going on, Emma and Lia won!  It was amazing when Owen announced the competition, how the girls started wheeling and dealing amongst themselves (best duets!) and also with Oliver!

Isabelle really enjoyed her party.  Lots of girly stuff and I definitely got a sneak peak into teen years!  After all the fun, it was time to wind down with a movie before lights out.  “Princess Diaries” was the chosen movie which the girls watched while in bed.

All the girls were asleep by 11:00pm.  They were all up early and then it was time for me to be a short order cook for breakfast requests before they all left.

Welcome back to Shanghai and Birthday Brunch

Right before school started, it was time for yet another Sunday Brunch!  Everybody was back to Shanghai after the long summer break so it was time to catch up with everyone and also celebrate my birthday!

The Emerald gang headed off to an old favorite – The Intercontinental.  I absolutely love their chocolate lollipops!

I also love their free flow champagne!  It was a leisurely 3-4 hours of eating, drinking, laughing, talking, and then eating some more and drinking some more.  It was just a shame that there was not enough time to really get caught up with everyone’s busy summer.

The food here is all good – cuisine from around the world so plenty of choice to suit every palate.  So many different buffet stations, you definitely need 3 hours to get around to each one!

The boys were totally hooked on all their electronic devices! We rationed their time on these as there is an awesome kids club at the Intercontinental on Sunday. All the kids got to do loads of different activities, run around outside and get arty crafty. Great for the adults to extend their "adult time".

Birthday Girl – Brunch at the 2nd tallest tower in Shanghai

On May 20th last year, we enjoyed the Lobster Sunday Brunch in the tallest tower in Shanghai – the SWFC (Shanghai World Financial Center), AKA the Bottle Opener.   When we asked Isabelle where she would like to go for her birthday lunch out, she said the Bottle Opener as she wanted Lobster, Crab, Shrimp and Prawn “on top of the world”.  (I cannot think where she gets her expensive taste from!!!)  Well, this year we had to make do with eating this in the 2nd tallest building in Shanghai as the “Shanghai Tower” is now officially taller!

Scott, Jo, Georgia and Saskia joined us and we had a lovely leisurely time.  All the kids had fun too!  Brunch is in the Park Hyatt hotel which occupy the 79th – 93rd floors of this tower.

The most important thing is that Isabelle really enjoyed her birthday meal out!  Happy Birthday to my sweet girl xx

Happy 5th Birthday, Oliver

Oliver seems to have been celebrating his birthday for many days!  His actual birthday was a low key affair.  He took some sweeties in to school for all of his friends to share.  At home, he opened presents from family (Owen’s last trip to the UK was good timing for picking up gifts from family in the UK and so he had quite a few to open).  Isabelle was so excited about her gift, that she wanted Oliver to open it first.  She loves wrapping things up so Oliver had 4 presents from Isabelle.  He ended up loving the things she had given him which was just as well as she had wrapped cars and stickers that he already owned!!  When he got to the big one, he was beside himself with excitement as he pealed back the paper.  He has seen lots of advertisements on TV for Hot Wheels and has been asking for a set.  Well, it was his lucky day as that is exactly what Isabelle gave him!

Oh my goodness, is that what i think it is?!?!?

Oh my goodness, is that what I think it is?!?!?

It is, it is, it is!

It is, it is, it is!  I love my sister xxxxxx

I want to set it up right now….. I am so lucky

He was so excited about this present, that it was several minutes before his attention came back to the pile still waiting to be opened.

Train and Magnetic Book from Grandma and Grandad

Oliver loves anything with wheels and often gets his Thomas the Tank train set out.  Percy was a hit as it is another battery powered one, which he loves because he can then set up “accidents and crashes” on the track while the train is going around!

Ben 10 gear from Auntie Kim

Oliver loves the Ben 10 cartoon’s and now he has his own Omnitrix!

Creepy crawlies from Grandpa Howard and Grannie-Annie

Uncle Lolly gave Oliver a squeezy creature that shows his blood and brains!

And a really cool whistle!

Uncle Peter, Auntie Emma, Maeve and Oscar gave a paper airplane book. The coolest paper airplanes ever from these designs! Now, I am finding them all over the house!

A Leap-pad from Mum and Dad

This is a really cool gadget.  He loves the letter app on this and we love the fact that he is learning how to trace his letters and recognize them while playing (and he doesn’t even know that he is learning!!) 1 week on and we have already had to replace the batteries!  I think we need to get the charger pack…….

Birthday “cake”

He had already had his birthday cake at his party a few days earlier, so on his actual birthday we just put candles in his ice cream dessert!

He was so grateful for his presents and acknowledged that he had been a very lucky boy.  A wonderful birthday celebration for a wonderful little boy.

Oliver’s 5th Birthday Party – AdventureZone

Oliver’s 5th birthday party was at AdventureZone at Kerry Parkside.  This is a great location for kids to have fun with slides, climbing frames and jumping areas.  We had booked the Circus Circus room with a Clown for Oliver’s birthday celebration.  He had invited all his class to his celebration and he had so much fun.  Owen and I especially liked that the kids could make as much mess as they wanted and we could just walk away at the end of the party!  No clean up responsibility!!

Oliver’s birthday “cake” was a a selection of vanilla and chocolate cupcakes grouped together and made to look like a race track.

Such a good idea to have a cake built in this way, because it makes it so easy to give a cupcake away!  We even got the individual boxes to give each cupcake away as part of the goody bag!  We had also booked a clown through Kerry Parkside to help with the party.  He made balloon animals, guns, water pistols, flowers as well as provide a magic show with Oliver as special guest.

Oliver loved being special assistant in this magic act.  He was laughing so much when he removed all the tissue out of his mouth and then seeing how much “ribbon” came out of the Clown’s mouth.  He was pulling for ages……

Sara, Oliver and Owen. Our littlest chick’s 5th birthday party! Where does the time go……

Oliver had a fabulous time at his party.  As this was his first “real”party, he was so excited about the whole experience.  He could not wait to open all his presents at home and was so thankful for everything he got.  He spent the rest of the afternoon playing with transformers and lego.

Oliver had a great time, but it was an expensive outlay.  Booking AdventureZone is not cheap, but we are so grateful that he had such a great experience.
