Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

BISS has been celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee along with the rest of the UK (and many areas of the Commonwealth).  Friday was the Pudong Big Lunch (part of the global Eden Project) and the kids enjoyed a picnic at school.  After lunch, all the school children let off red, white and blue balloons into the sky. they had 1 each to release.  I wish I could have seen over a 1000 balloons in British colours floating away.  Here are a couple of photos from the school newsletter:

Isabelle also had an ICT project to upload a photo of her face into a picture of the Queen and then type in what she would do if she was Queen for a Day:

I thought she did a fabulous job and think she would be an awesome Queen!

Both children came home with commemorative tea-towels too:

How to learn English from the Chinese point of view

After a particularly frustrating exchange between Owen and Driver Fu, where Owen failed to make himself understood, Driver Fu gave Owen a phrase book with phonetic pronunciations of phrases and words.  Owen promptly had an attack of the giggles when he was reading the English from the Chinese point of view.  Here are a few examples (I will provide answers on the next post – see how many you can get before then):

1.  san ke you fou re si wan de fou mi ou.

2.  kan you du san mu shao ping fou mi.

3.  ai dong te an de si tang de ying ge li shi e tao.

4.  ai ou pei yin kai shi.

5.  hai ou pu.  fu wai e.  rao bo rui.  se fu se fu.

Good luck!  I am hoping that the phonetic pronunciation of Chinese words are much more accurate in my book/app!

“Knock, Knock”, “Who’s there?” “Amos” “Amos Who?”

A Mosquito!

Heard this joke this morning and thought it so appropriate for us!  The mosquito’s are a nightmare here.  Every spare outlet in our house has a mosquito repellent device plugged in.

The kids wear special bracelets with repellent in them.  We spray each other down with repellent.  And, still we get bitten!  Isabelle, especially, seems to be a magnet for the tiger mosquito’s we have here so on top of all those precautions, she also needs itch relief.  Roll on to Autumn when all the bugs are supposed to disappear…….

“Just Because” Flowers

Just because flowers

Just because flowers

I don’t get flowers from Owen very often, which means that when I do they are all the more special.  I came home from work this week to a beautiful arrangement in a beautiful crystal vase with a note that said “Just Because”!  What a lucky girl I am.

Summer Fair at BISS

What a glorious weekend of weather – hot, blue skies and plenty of sunshine!  It was the annual fundraiser at BISS on Saturday – all proceeds benefit a local orphanage.  It was very well set up with lots of activities for the kids to do, lots of stalls for the adults to buy things and entertainment from a local group and school kids all afternoon.  I was on duty for 1 hour, manning the coconut shy.  Meanwhile, Owen took Isabelle and Oliver to the obstacle course and all the places to win stamps to cash in for prizes!  They had fun on a surf machine and the water slides – it was nice to cool down after being in the heat all day.

The kids School!

The kids School!

It was an afternoon filled with fun and we came home with bags full of candy, toys and information on lots of local providers.  We have bought a barbeque that will be delivered on Monday, and I have put an order in for a Norwegian raincoat (I am going to need that for the rainy season here!!)  Tesco were promoting their “Finest” wine and we will be placing an order with them too!  Judging by the number of people at the school, I think it will be a very healthy donation to the local orphanage.

The highest restaurant in the world

Outside the "Bottle Opener"

Outside the “Bottle Opener”

Today we went to the “Bottle Opener” building which is the tallest building in Shanghai, and has the Park Hyatt hotel on floors 79 to 93.  It was Lobster Brunch day for us on floor 91. We had a table by the window and had a fabulous view across Shanghai and the Bund.

The elevator ride up did not take as long as I thought it would, but all of our ears “popped” on the way up!

Our reservation was for noon and we did not leave until 2.30!  It was quite the experience.

Not only do you select items from the menu, but they also have a cold buffet set up with meats, salads and smoked salmon, and a dessert buffet.  We all started with the dressed crab (special plates for the kids) – it was fabulous.  Then Isabelle, Oliver and I had the grilled lobster, while Owen had the Wok Fried Lobster – all delicious.  We both had the poached egg, the kids moved onto the cold buffet at this point.  Owen and the kids had lobster ravioli and I had lobster bisque.  We were all feeling completely stuffed atthis point, but HAD to have dessert.  All of us loaded our plates with selections from the dessert bar!  All of this, and free flowing Taittinger champagne!

After complaining about the low tech “squat” toilets, I couldn’t resist getting a photo of the high tech “posh” toilet in the restaurant at the Park Hyatt:

Poor Isabelle had no idea what all the buttons did and what to push to just flush!  I did not experiment with any of the other buttons!!!!!

Great views from the restaurant – we all loved the telescopes up there too.  This will not be the tallest building for much longer – Shanghai is now building a taller one.
