Stupid and stupider

A loud scream from the kitchen had me running in to see that Owen needed ice for his hand.  He had been cooking some meat by starting it in the frying pan, then putting it in the oven to finish off.  Of course, it was now back on hob and what do you usually do when you want to move a frying pan?  You pick it up!

I quickly filled the bowl with ice to cool his burning hand down and then take over preparing dinner.  Owen had just finished telling me what he had done with the extremely hot frying pan and handle.  I am thinking that this was a really stupid thing he had done as he had just used the oven glove to take it out of the oven.

He tells me that the meat is ready (his hand is still in the bowl).  What do I do?  I pick up the frying pan and burn MY hand!!!!  What a pair.  Stupid and stupider for sure.  We both spend the evening clutching ice wrapped in kitchen towel and then spraying after-sun lotion to cool our burning palms.  I cannot believe that we both did exactly the same idiotic action – I am even more amazed at my own stupidity after just seeing Owen do it.

Juggling Act

I am not very good at Juggling.  This week, Owen is back in the UK and I am trying to juggle being a mum full time and work full time.  It just doesn’t work and I am failing at both.

In the continuing on-going saga of the medical coverage here, Owen has had to return to the UK at very short notice to meet with his UK Doctors.  We have International Medical insurance for our time in China and are also registered with an International Medical facility here.  At first glance, this is state of the art, with modern equipment, English speaking Doctors and staff, clean facilities and very professional looking surroundings.  However, it is almost impossible to get a straight answer and the answer can change from week to week.  Consequently, information we were given on our look/see visit in December has proven to be false and has left Owen unable to get some of the medication that he takes to alleviate the back pain he continually suffers with.  So, it is back to the UK for Owen this week.  I hope he comes back……..

Meanwhile, I am juggling school bus stop drop off, pick up, dinner, laundry, homework, remembering and planning for all the different school activities, commuting, meetings, deadlines, projects and conference calls.  For only 4 days.

Luckily, the Ex-pat community really do support one another.  My meeting ran late yesterday and I was cutting it fine to get back in time for the school bus drop off.  1 quick text and my mind was put at rest with an immediate offer to collect them and keep them until I got there (I was 5 minutes late!)

This week I feel like a total failure at everything.  I really don’t know how single mothers cope – to my mind it is impossible to do it all.  I am so grateful for such a supportive husband who takes care of so much that I often take for granted.  Never again!!!!!!!

20th Wedding Anniversary – night out at Mr & Mrs Bund

June 6th was Owen and I’s 20th Wedding Anniversary.  Quite a shock as I don’t feel old enough to be married that long!  What a ride it has been – lots of adventures, memories, travel, laughs, ups (many), downs (just a few) and all of it shared with a wonderful man.  We have 2 fabulous children that are the light of my life and the continuing best accomplishment of our marriage and my life.

Friday night was our official celebration.  It was also our first out without the kids since we arrived in China.  We have found a great babysitter so the kids were left in safe hands.  We went to Mr & Mrs Bund in downtown Shanghai.  The restaurant overlooks the fantastic skyline which is brilliantly lit up at night.  It reminded us both of 2 Urban Licks in Atlanta, very open, open kitchen and similar vibe.  They make a big deal out of you making the most of their menu, your way, so that is exactly what we did.  Owen started the evening off with a cocktail – an unusual margarita which was delicious.  We shared seared scallops with ginger and lime, and a huge tiger shrimp served in a glass jar with citrus.  The scallops were quite exquisite – a perfect combination of flavours.  The shrimp’s presentation was very original and the infusion of the citrus peel and juices made this dish.   Following this, Owen and I shared a huge Wagyu Ribeye Steak which was FANTASTIC.  I have never eaten steak that literally melts in your mouth.  We chose dauphanoise potatoes that were so finely sliced and mixed with brie and proscuitto – wonderful.  Steamed garlic spinach and a herb salad completed this course.

The menu was so impressive, we were spoilt for choice.  I felt full after finishing the steak, but was determined to have dessert!  Owen choose Tart Tatin and I had their signature Lemon and Lemon.  This is a time consuming dish to prepare as the lemon is cooked whole in sugar for 3 days.  It is then scooped out and filled with lemon sorbet, lemon curd and vanilla chantilly cream.  I was not sure about my choice when I was presented with a whole lemon on the plate, but once I had cut into the lemon and taken my first bite, I had to resist the urge to stuff the whole thing in my mouth!!

To say it was a 5 Star meal is under-rating our experience.  It was all super yummy!  The service was great and it was an all round wonderful night out.  Even the toilets had candelabra in them!  I loved the fact that kitchen was open and you could see all the chefs busily preparing the delicious food.

After dinner, Owen and I walked along the river front and admired the lights – at least until 11.00pm when they were all switched off!  We passed a British shaped postbox painted green, obviously a hang-over from British days in the early 20th century:

Almost like home!

The Bund is the corner turn of the Huangpu River in Shanghai.  One side is the modern skyscraper buildings and the heart of the Financial district.  The other side (where we ate) is the older European influenced district with many original buildings in an old British colonial style.  There is even a mini replica of Big Ben!

The skyline is obscured in this photo due to the smog!  You cannot see the tallest building – the Bottle Opener, because of the pollution.  It has been especially humid in the last few days, so I do not think we will be seeing clear skies for a while.

“Just Because” Flowers

Just because flowers

Just because flowers

I don’t get flowers from Owen very often, which means that when I do they are all the more special.  I came home from work this week to a beautiful arrangement in a beautiful crystal vase with a note that said “Just Because”!  What a lucky girl I am.

Dads and Lads and Tents

Oliver has a Dad’s and Lad’s weekend coming up which is an overnight camping event at BISS on the Football field.  All the sons and their Dad’s will be pitching tents, playing games, eating and drinking prior to a night in the tents; a group breakfast and then home.  We had been told that camping gear is very reasonable here, so today we all went to the store to take a look.  45 minutes later and 1 full shopping trolley, we return home with a tent, 4 sleeping bags, 4 sleeping mats, a couple of lights and a couple of chairs.  We didn’t spend too much either!  The tent springs to life, like a life raft on the Baring Sea (Deadliest Catch reference!)  Out of the cover, give it a shake and 2 seconds later there is a tent ready to sleep in!  So clever.

Both children are so excited and tonight they are sleeping in the tent, in our living room, on the 16th floor of an apartment complex!  Lots of giggles, whispering and rustles for quite some time after official lights out, so I am hoping they will sleep in tomorrow!!

They look just like the hungry caterpillar!

The Start of the Adventure

One week ago the adventures of OSIO in Shanghai began.  OSIO is our family: Owen, Sara, Isabelle and Oliver, not forgetting Tetley our dog.

We had packed up our household contents, had 8 suitcases full of clothes and toys, spent a wonderful week with my parents and then got on a plane from London Heathrow bound for a 2 year assignment in Shanghai, China.  I work for a large, global software company and am so fortunate to have this opportunity of not only a fabulous career move, but also a fabulous experience.

The Journey – 12 hours on a plane with 2 small children (they are 6 and 4) was not something I was looking forward to.  But, to my surprise, there was not a single complaint from either of them.  They watched a few movies, slept for a bit, played for a bit, and were perfect angels.  I can say this, because the row in front had the child from h”*% – constantly leaning over, running up and down the aisles, being loud when all the lights were off for sleep time and being a general pain to all those around him.  It made me appreciate my 2 wonderfully behaved, well mannered, perfect little angels!!  There were also 3-4 devils of the older variety – getting very drunk and progressively louder with the alcohol consumption.  In fact, the British Airways staff were so irritated with them that they asked Owen to complete a complaint form!  Other than that, an uneventful flight.  Tetley was also travelling with us – in the hold beneath us!  However, we could not pick her up at baggage claim as she had to go off for 7 days of quarantine.

Arrival – was so smooth, I was starting to wonder if I was still asleep and dreaming.  Smooth sailing through customs and immigration.  We were met immediately outside by the Pet people to collect the paperwork on Tetley and right behind them were 2 drivers to whisk the 4 of us, 8 suitcases and 7 pieces of hand luggage off to our temporary accommodation!
